Performer of the Week
Last winter, when her serial-killer father-in-law attempted to introduce her to her maker via a poisoned dart, AM proved that she's no slouch when it comes to playing damsel in distress. These days, Kendall is facing a crisis of a different sort, one that's as achingly relatable as the whole SS business was cartoonish-that of a mother whose baby boys are in jeopardy., one son rendered deaf by a tragic accident, the other born dangerously premature.
With both of her children in the hospital, Kendall has shuttled, as if through a fog of horrified disbelief and thoroughgoing (??) exhaustion, from one tiny bedside to to another. The constant for viewers riding this emotional roller coaster alongside Kendall as doctors deliver news alternately uplifting and devastating has been the delicacry and precision of Minshew's work-whimpering at the sight of an unconscious Spike, working herself into a frenzy as she let herself imagine how frightened he must be, frozen and colorless when she walked in on Annie consoling Zach and jumped to the (thankfully mistaken) conclusion that Ian hadn't survived brain surgery(me;It was heart surgery, but they say brain. Even SOD hates Lefty) tender and hope-filled while 'introducing' herself to her newborn ("there are so many things I have wanted to tell you, like how handsome you are, and what a gift you are to your dad and me.." questioning her ability to give her boys everything they need.
Kendall's darkest hour has showcased Minshew at her absolute best: she has made Kendall's heartache and helplessness palpable, setting the gold standard the excellent, wrenching performances this storyline has inspired across the AMC universe and beautifully translating the primal love that Kendall's children awakened in her -not to mention the primal strength.
