All My Children viewers aren't actually pacing corridors, sipping bitter coffee and waiting for scraps of news in the lounges at Pine Valley Hospital. They don't have one child in a coma and another in the neonatal intensive care unit, and they don't have the nagging fear that spending time with one hurt son comes at the expense of the other. But Alicia Minshew's all-out performance as Kendall in crisis made all of that feel way to real. At the same time, Minshew's outing offered a reminder that well-ordered lives can dissolve into chaos with one ill-timed swerve of a steering wheel.
Keeping it RealMinshew wisely chose to play her alter ego as stripped-down and raw as possible. In a hospital gown that gobbled up her fragile frame, new mom Kendall tried to make sense of what had happened to Spike and Ian. Though ordered to rest, Minshew's character used the strength she had left to fight to stay by a comatose Spike's side. "Mommy's going to make it all better, I promise," she cooed. "Then I'm going to take you home, and we're going to have lots of yummy, yummy cake with red frosting on it." But the news that her prematurely born second child needed surgery diverted Kendall's focus, and soon Minshew was looking bewildered and overwhelmed as Zach and Dr. Delano discussed their options. "His skin is transparent," she mused, giving th eline a nice blend of wonder and fear. And when Erica showed up to take her daughter back to her room, Minshew sounded lost as the details of her sons' medical problems blended in an exhausted Kendall's mind. "They're going to give Spike an operation to fix a hole in his heart. Oh, no, wait --" she paused, horrified. "That's... my other baby is having the operation, not Spike." Minshew's assured portrayal of her spirited character was completely gone for a moment, replaced by a frightened mom temporarily incapable of understanding the turmoil all around her.
A Mother's LoveAs Kendall continued to insist that she needed to be with Spike, Erica just as strongly pointed out her own need to take care of her child -- adult or not. The moment was a strong one, and Minshew used it as the breaking point for her frustrated and aching character. her sobs threatened to overtake her -- and we all know how hard it is for anyone or anything to get the better of Kendall Hart Slater.
The vulnerability and fear Minshew showcased in a weeks' worth of painful episodes was a sight to behold; let's just hope the Emmy judges were reaching for their tissues, too.
