Here, Alicia, this Emmy’s for you
By Kara Kitts | Tuesday, August 28, 2007, 12:26 AM

Psst. Hey, Daytime Emmy voters? Yeah, I’m talking to you. Can we just go ahead and send one of your shiny statuettes to Alicia Minshew? Let it flap its golden wings to the All My Children studio in New York so it can land right in her talented little lap.

I know the nominations are practically a year away, but seriously … just shut down the category of best actress now because if Alicia doesn’t deserve the award for her work this go ‘round, then I don’t know who does.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Kendall, but only the truly heartless would be unaffected as she struggles with the physical complications facing her children: One son born premature and fighting for his life in the hospital, the other son involved in a car accident that stripped him of his ability to hear.

What’s most amazing to me is the fact that Alicia is not a mother in real life. You wouldn’t know it watching her performances. She zigzags from strength to exhaustion to anger to fear to blame to hurt … all the emotions I would expect from someone who really understands what it means to love a child of her own.

Obviously, this kind of tragic material lends itself to scenes for the Emmy reel. But I know that a storyline alone can’t make an audience feel what the characters feel. That responsibility lies with the performer. Alicia Minshew has taken that responsibility and run with it. In fact, she’s running so hard that I have to believe the actress herself is almost as emotionally exhausted as Kendall is.

Just watching her wears me out, and I mean that as the ultimate compliment. An actress who can blur the line between reality and role play is an actress who is becoming a master at her craft. And that’s the type of work the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences should be rewarding.

To learn more about Kendall and her storyline, check out the All My Children site at ABC.
