Tentative deal could be near in writers strike
Source says settlement could be reached early next week

Breaking news

LOS ANGELES - A breakthrough in contract talks has been reached between Hollywood studios and striking writers and could lead to a tentative deal as early as next week, a person close to the ongoing negotiations said Saturday.

The two sides breached the gap Friday on the thorniest issues, those concerning compensation for projects distributed via the Internet, said the person, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Although work remains to be done on elements of the agreement, prospects for a deal appeared solid, the person said. The tentative agreement would have to be approved by a majority of guild members.

The Writers Guild of America, whose 3-month-old strike has brought the entertainment industry to a standstill, began informal talks with top media company executives Jan. 23 in an attempt to reach a new deal covering governing work for film, TV and digital media.

A lot of talk out there today, with multiple people from both sides of the “aisle” emailing me. There’s movement in the tree line, people. Let’s hope and pray.

Maybe this thing really is almost over.

When it's over will the writing be any better, probably NOT :sympathy

Please let this be so. DOOL fired all of their writers yesterday, so maybe they also think that there will be a pool of nonstriking writers to choose from very soon.

Thanks for the info, Cheryl!

You have a point Jules. They might have heard the rumblings that they were close to an agreement. Plus all of the writer's that were fired were brought in by Scheffer. Maybe AMC can pick them up and Scheffer too. Especially Tom Casiello, he seems to have his finger on the pulse of what the viewers want to see. I'm in love with his farewell post on his myspace blog:

Which gives me hope that the soap opera world doesn't have to be about plot stunts and location shoots and sensationalistic stories. You want life. You want love. You want friendship and desire and loss and gain and death and resurrection. You want to feel something. You want to be moved. You want to believe.

*sigh* This quote gives me hope that soaps operas can get their glory back if the networks would just sit back and let them.

Thanks for posting it.
